What is OMG Sauce?

OMG Sauce is a sweet and tangy BBQ ranch sauce made with barbecue sauce, dry ranch seasoning, honey, hot sauce, and dry mustard.

Unlike creamy BBQ ranch dipping sauces, this version starts with barbecue sauce and gets its ranch flavor from dry ranch seasoning. Simmering everything together creates a smooth, flavorful sauce that works as both a dipping sauce and a condiment.

It’s one of those sauces that can go with just about anything, which makes the name pretty fitting!

Key Ingredients

NOTE: This section highlights ingredients used in the recipe. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.

Barbecue sauce

This makes up the base of the sauce. Sweet Baby Ray’s is my go-to, but you can use your favorite barbecue sauce.

Dry ranch salad dressing mix

Ranch seasoning adds a savory, herby flavor without making the sauce creamy.

Honey

Adds sweetness and helps balance the tanginess of the barbecue sauce and mustard.

Hot sauce

A few dashes give the sauce a little kick. You can adjust it to your preference.

Dry mustard

Adds another layer of tangy, savory flavor and helps balance the sweetness.

Ingredients & Substitutions

NOTE: This section suggests substitutions. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.

  • Dry ranch salad dressing mix – Adds the signature ranch seasoning to the sauce. Either store-bought or homemade works fine.
  • Barbecue sauce – Sweet Baby Ray’s is the suggested choice, but you can substitute your favorite BBQ sauce. Different sauces will change the sweetness, smokiness, and spice level.
  • Hot sauce – Adds a little heat. Adjust according to your preference.
  • Honey – Adds sweetness and balances the tangy flavors. Maple syrup or agave nectar can be substituted in equal amounts. Brown sugar can also work, but start with 3 tablespoons and adjust to taste.
  • Dry mustard – Adds tang and savory mustard flavor. If you don’t have dry mustard, substitute 1½ teaspoons yellow mustard or Dijon mustard.

Variations

  • Make it spicier: Add a little more hot sauce until it reaches your preferred heat level.
  • Make it milder: Use fewer dashes of hot sauce or leave it out.
  • Change the BBQ flavor: Try the recipe with a smoky, spicy, honey, or hickory-style barbecue sauce. The flavor of the finished sauce will change depending on the BBQ sauce you use.
  • Make it sweeter: Add a little extra honey if you prefer a sweeter dipping sauce.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use a barbecue sauce you already know you enjoy since it makes up most of the recipe.
  • Stir the sauce occasionally while it simmers so the bottom does not scorch.
  • Keep an eye on the saucepan when bringing the mixture to a boil.
  • Remember that different barbecue sauces vary in sweetness, tanginess, smokiness, and spice.
  • Start with only a few dashes of hot sauce. You can always make the next batch hotter.
  • Allow the sauce to cool before transferring it to your storage container.
