What is a Chicago Hot Dog?

A Chicago Hot Dog is a classic all-beef hot dog served in a steamed or toasted poppy seed bun and topped with yellow mustard, bright green sweet relish, chopped onions, tomato wedges, a dill pickle spear, sport peppers, and a sprinkle of celery salt.

One thing you’ll never find on an authentic Chicago Dog? Ketchup.

Chicagoans are famously passionate about keeping ketchup off their hot dogs. While you can certainly add it if you like, traditional Chicago Hot Dogs are served without it.

Ingredients & Substitutions

NOTE: This section suggests substitutions. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.

  • Butter – Adds flavor while helping toast the buns and brown the hot dogs. Vegetable oil may be substituted.
  • All-beef hot dogs – Traditional for an authentic experience. Any quality beef frank works well.
  • Poppy seed buns – A signature part of a classic Chicago Dog. Regular hot dog buns may be used if necessary.
  • Yellow mustard – Classic topping that shouldn’t be replaced for authentic flavor.
  • Sweet relish – Bright green Chicago-style relish is traditional, but regular sweet pickle relish tastes nearly identical.
  • White onion – Adds fresh crunch and mild bite. Yellow onion may be substituted if needed.
  • Tomatoes – Roma or vine-ripened tomatoes both work well.
  • Dill pickle spears – Use refrigerated or shelf-stable pickle spears.
  • Sport peppers – One of the defining toppings. Pickled pepperoncini can be used in a pinch, though the flavor will differ.
  • Celery salt – Don’t skip it. It provides the signature finishing flavor of a Chicago Dog.

Variations

  • Grilled Chicago Dogs – Cook the hot dogs on the grill instead of in a skillet for a smoky flavor.
  • Steamed buns – For a more traditional Chicago-style presentation, steam the buns rather than toast them.
  • Spicier version – Add extra sport peppers or a splash of the pickling liquid.
  • Mini Chicago Dogs – Use cocktail hot dogs and mini buns for appetizers or game day parties.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use all-beef hot dogs for authentic flavor.
  • Toast the buns until lightly crisp but still soft inside.
  • Pat tomato slices dry before assembling to reduce excess moisture.
  • Don’t skip the celery salt. It adds the signature finishing flavor.
  • Assemble the hot dogs just before serving.
  • If you can’t find sport peppers locally, many grocery stores carry them near the pickles, or you can order them online.

FAQs

Why is relish on a Chicago Hot Dog bright green?

Traditional Chicago Dog relish is dyed a vibrant green, but regular sweet relish tastes nearly identical. If you’d like the classic appearance, simply add a few drops of green food coloring.

What are sport peppers?

Sport peppers are small pickled chili peppers with mild to medium heat. They provide one of the signature flavors of an authentic Chicago Hot Dog.

Can I grill the hot dogs instead?

Absolutely. Grilling adds wonderful smoky flavor while still creating an authentic Chicago Dog.

Can I make Chicago Hot Dogs ahead of time?

It’s best to prepare the toppings ahead of time but assemble each Chicago Hot Dog just before serving.

Why doesn’t a Chicago Dog have ketchup?

Traditionally, ketchup is never served on an authentic Chicago Hot Dog. The combination of mustard, relish, tomatoes, onions, pickle, sport peppers, and celery salt already provides a complete balance of sweet, tangy, salty, and spicy flavors.

Can I use regular hot dog buns?

Yes. Poppy seed buns are traditional, but regular buns work if that’s what you have available.

Where can I buy sport peppers?

Many larger grocery stores carry them in the pickle aisle. They’re also widely available online.

Can I use beef franks from any brand?

Yes. Choose a quality all-beef hot dog for the best flavor.

How to Store Chicago Hot Dogs

For best results, store each ingredient separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Fully assembled Chicago Hot Dogs are best enjoyed immediately since the toppings can soften the bun over time.
