What is a Crunchwrap Supreme?
A Crunchwrap Supreme is a layered tortilla wrap made famous by Taco Bell. Instead of being rolled like a burrito, the large flour tortilla is folded around the filling in pleats to create a round, enclosed wrap.
Inside, you’ll find seasoned ground beef, nacho cheese, a crunchy tostada, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, and shredded cheese. The folded wrap is then cooked in a skillet until the outside is golden and crisp.
The tostada is what really sets a Taco Bell Crunchwrap copycat apart from an ordinary burrito or quesadilla. It creates a crunchy layer between the warm beef and cheese and the cool, fresh toppings.
Key Ingredients
NOTE: This section highlights ingredients used in the recipe. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.
Ground beef: The savory base of the filling. It’s cooked and seasoned before assembling the Crunchwraps.
Taco seasoning: Gives the beef its classic taco flavor.
Large flour tortillas: These form the outside of each Crunchwrap. You’ll also cut additional tortillas into smaller circles to help close the top.
Nacho cheese sauce: Adds the creamy, cheesy layer that makes this recipe especially indulgent.
Tostadas: The secret to the signature crunch in the middle.
Sour cream: Adds a cool, creamy contrast to the seasoned beef and nacho cheese.
Lettuce and tomatoes: Fresh toppings balance the rich, cheesy filling.
Cheddar cheese: Adds another cheesy layer and plenty of flavor.
Vegetable oil: Helps the outside of the Crunchwrap become crisp and golden in the skillet.

Ingredients & Substitutions
NOTE: This section suggests substitutions. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.
- Ground beef: Ground turkey or ground chicken can be used instead. Cook either completely before adding the seasoning.
- Taco seasoning: Homemade taco seasoning can be used in place of packaged seasoning.
- Water: Needed to help distribute the taco seasoning and create the seasoned beef mixture. Broth can also work if you want additional flavor.
- Large flour tortillas: Burrito-size flour tortillas are the best choice because you need enough surface area for folding. Whole wheat tortillas can also work if they’re large and flexible enough.
- Nacho cheese sauce: Queso dip is an easy substitute. Taco sauce, salsa, or guacamole can also be used, although each will give the Crunchwrap a different flavor and texture.
- Tostadas: These provide the signature crunchy center. Crunchy corn tortilla chips can work if tostadas aren’t available.
- Sour cream: Plain Greek yogurt can be substituted for a similar cool, creamy layer.
- Shredded lettuce: Iceberg or romaine both work well. You can also leave the lettuce out if you prefer.
- Tomatoes: Roma, vine-ripened, or another firm tomato works. Pico de gallo can also be used, but drain excess liquid first so the Crunchwrap doesn’t become soggy.
- Cheddar cheese: Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, Mexican blend, pepper Jack, or another favorite shredded cheese can be substituted.
- Vegetable oil: Canola, avocado, or another neutral cooking oil works just as well.
Variations
- Spicy Crunchwrap: Add sliced jalapeños or your favorite hot sauce before folding.
- Guacamole Crunchwrap: Add a layer of guacamole with the sour cream and vegetables.
- Onion Crunchwrap: Sprinkle diced onions over the tomatoes for extra flavor and crunch.
- Extra cheesy: Add more shredded cheddar or try another favorite shredded cheese.
- Ground turkey or chicken: Replace the ground beef with ground turkey or ground chicken and cook it completely before seasoning.
- Different sauce: Swap the nacho cheese sauce for queso dip, taco sauce, salsa, or another sauce you enjoy.

Tips for Best Results
- Don’t overfill the tortillas. Too much filling makes the Crunchwrap difficult to close and increases the chance of it opening during cooking.
- Keep the filling centered. Leaving enough tortilla around the edges makes folding much easier.
- Fold tightly. Create overlapping pleats around the entire Crunchwrap so the filling stays enclosed.
- Cook seam-side down first. This helps seal the folded tortilla before you flip it.
- Watch the heat. Medium heat allows the tortilla to become golden and crisp without burning.
- Serve them right away. Crunchwraps are best while the tortilla and tostada are still crispy.
- Prep before assembling. Have all your toppings ready so you can build the Crunchwraps quickly.
FAQs
Yes. Ground turkey or ground chicken works well in place of the ground beef. Cook it completely, then add the taco seasoning and water as directed.
Yes. Queso dip is the closest alternative, but you can also use taco sauce, salsa, guacamole, or another sauce you enjoy.
A tostada gives the Crunchwrap its signature crunchy center, but crunchy corn tortilla chips can work in a pinch. Arrange enough chips to create a relatively even layer in the center.
It may be overfilled, or the tortilla may not have been folded tightly enough. Keep the filling centered, leave plenty of tortilla around the outside, and overlap the pleats as you fold. Cooking it seam-side down first also helps seal it.
Avoid assembling it too far in advance, and don’t overload it with wet ingredients. Cook it until both sides are golden and serve it shortly after cooking.
Absolutely. Add guacamole, jalapeños, diced onions, hot sauce, or other taco toppings you enjoy. Just be careful not to add so much filling that the tortilla becomes difficult to close.
The smaller tortilla circles help cover the filling so the larger tortilla can completely enclose it. Regular taco-sized flour tortillas can also be used for this. If your large tortillas are big enough to fold over and completely cover the filling without leaving a gap, you may not need the extra tortilla piece at all.
Storage
Store leftover Crunchwraps in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Keep in mind that the tostada and fresh vegetables will soften during storage. Reheating the Crunchwrap in a skillet, air fryer, or oven will help restore some of the crisp texture.
Quick Steps
NOTE: This section includes a step-by-step guide. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.
- Cook the beef. Brown the ground beef, drain if needed, then add taco seasoning and water. Simmer until thickened.
- Prepare the tortillas. Use a tostada as a guide to cut four tortillas into smaller circles.
- Build the layers. Add seasoned beef and nacho cheese to the center of each large tortilla.
- Add the crunch. Place a tostada over the beef and cheese.
- Add the toppings. Layer on sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese.
- Close the Crunchwrap. Place a smaller tortilla circle on top and fold the edges of the large tortilla toward the center, creating pleats.
- Cook until crispy. Cook seam-side down in a lightly oiled skillet, then flip and brown the other side.
- Serve hot. Enjoy while the outside is crisp and the filling is warm.

Make Ahead

Cook and season the ground beef, then refrigerate it in an airtight container. You can also chop the tomatoes and prepare the lettuce and cheese ahead of time.
For the best texture, wait to assemble the copycat Crunchwrap recipe until you’re ready to cook it. The sour cream, tomatoes, and other moist ingredients can eventually soften the tostada and tortillas.
What to serve with Crunchwrap Supreme
A homemade Crunchwrap recipe can easily be a complete meal by itself, but a few simple sides can turn it into a full Mexican-inspired dinner.
Try serving your Crunchwraps with Mexican rice, refried beans, black beans, chips and salsa, queso, guacamole, or street corn. A simple corn and avocado salad would also provide a fresh contrast to the rich filling.
For dipping, put out extra nacho cheese sauce, salsa, taco sauce, sour cream, or guacamole and let everyone choose their favorite.

Notes
🥡 Storage
- Store leftover Crunchwraps in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The tostada and vegetables will soften during storage, so freshly made Crunchwraps will have the best texture.
♨️ Reheating
- Reheat Crunchwraps in a skillet over medium-low heat until warmed through and crisp on both sides. You can also use an air fryer or oven to help restore the crispy exterior.
- The microwave works when you’re short on time, but the tortilla will be much softer.
❄️ Freezing
- Fully assembled Crunchwraps aren’t ideal for freezing because sour cream, lettuce, and tomatoes don’t freeze and thaw particularly well.
- For a freezer-friendly option, assemble them with the seasoned beef, nacho cheese, tostada, and shredded cheese, leaving out the sour cream and fresh vegetables. Add the cold toppings after reheating if desired.
💡 Tips for best results
- Don’t overfill the tortillas, and keep the filling concentrated in the center. Fold the tortilla firmly and cook the seam side first to help seal the Crunchwrap.
- For maximum crunch, assemble the Crunchwraps shortly before cooking and serve them hot.
🍳 Alternate cooking methods
Air fryer: Crunchwraps can be air fried instead of pan-fried. Place them seam-side down in the basket and air fry until golden, crisp, and heated through, flipping if needed for even browning. Exact cooking time can vary by air fryer. Oven: Arrange the assembled Crunchwraps seam-side down on a baking sheet and bake until hot and crisp, flipping if needed for even browning. Pan-frying will give you the closest result to the original recipe.♻️ Leftovers
- Leftover seasoned taco meat is great for tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, taco salads, or loaded fries.
- Extra tortillas and toppings can easily become quick quesadillas or soft tacos the following day.
📝 Notes
- Add guacamole, sliced jalapeños, or diced onions for additional flavor.
- Try different shredded cheeses to customize the filling.
- Fold the tortillas tightly so the filling stays inside during cooking.
- Avoid adding too many wet ingredients, which can soften the tostada.
- Cook seam-side down first to help keep the Crunchwrap closed.
