What are fried apples?

Southern Fried Apples are a classic comfort food made by gently cooking fresh apple slices in butter, brown sugar, and warm spices until they’re tender and coated in a rich syrup. Despite the name, they aren’t deep fried.

Instead, they’re cooked in a skillet where the butter, sugars, spices, and apple juice create a glossy sauce that clings to every slice.

They’re popular throughout the South and are often served alongside breakfast favorites like biscuits and pancakes, paired with savory dishes such as pork chops or ham, or enjoyed as a simple dessert.

If you love the fried apples served at Cracker Barrel, you’ll love this homemade version made with fresh apples, butter, brown sugar, and warm spices.

Key Ingredients

NOTE: This section highlights ingredients used in the recipe. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.

Apples

Honeycrisp apples are my favorite because they stay slightly firm while becoming perfectly tender. Fuji, Pink Lady, and Golden Delicious are also excellent choices.

Salted butter

Butter creates the rich, silky base of the sauce while adding incredible flavor.

Brown sugar

Brown sugar adds deep caramel notes that pair beautifully with apples.

Granulated sugar

A little granulated sugar balances the tartness of the apples without making the sauce overly sweet.

Apple juice

Apple juice helps create the syrup while boosting the fresh apple flavor.

Cornstarch slurry

A mixture of cornstarch and water thickens the cooking liquid into a glossy sauce.

Warm spices

Cinnamon, allspice, and ground ginger give these fried apples their classic cozy flavor.

Vanilla extract

A splash of vanilla rounds everything out with warmth and sweetness.

Ingredients & Substitutions

NOTE: This section suggests substitutions. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.

  • Honeycrisp apples – Fuji, Pink Lady, or Golden Delicious also work well. Avoid softer apples like McIntosh because they can become mushy.
  • Lemon juice – Helps prevent browning. Bottled lemon juice may be substituted if needed.
  • Salted butter – Unsalted butter may be used. Add a pinch of salt with the spices.
  • Brown sugar – Light or dark brown sugar both work.
  • Granulated sugar – Adjust slightly depending on how sweet your apples are. Ground cinnamon – Adds classic warm flavor.
  • Ground allspice – Provides additional warmth and depth.
  • Ground ginger – Balances the sweetness with a subtle spice.
  • Apple juice – Adds moisture and enhances the apple flavor.
  • Cornstarch – Thickens the sauce into a glossy syrup.
  • Vanilla extract – Adds warmth and rounds out the flavors.

Variations

  • Use different apples – Honeycrisp is my favorite, but Fuji, Pink Lady, and Golden Delicious all work well.
  • Add nuts – Stir in chopped pecans or walnuts just before serving for extra crunch.
  • Make them extra spiced – Add a pinch of nutmeg or cloves for even more warm spice flavor.
  • Add maple flavor – Replace a small amount of the brown sugar with maple syrup for another layer of sweetness.
  • Make them less sweet – If you’re using naturally sweet apples, reduce the amount of sugar to suit your taste.

Tips for Best Results

  • Slice the apples into even wedges so they cook at the same rate.
  • Toss the apples with lemon juice as you peel them to help prevent browning.
  • Choose firm apples that hold their shape during cooking.
  • Stir gently to avoid breaking the apple slices.
  • Don’t overcook the apples. They should be tender while still holding their shape.
  • If the apples begin cooking too quickly, reduce the heat.
  • Add the vanilla after removing the skillet from the heat for the best flavor.

FAQs

What are the best apples for fried apples?

Firm apples work best because they hold their shape while cooking. Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, and Golden Delicious are all excellent choices.

Can I use unsalted butter?

Yes. If using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt along with the spices to help balance the sweetness.

Can I make these cinnamon apples ahead of time?

Absolutely. Fried apples store well in the refrigerator for up to four days and reheat beautifully.

Can I freeze fried apples?

Yes. While the texture may soften slightly after thawing, they freeze well for future use. Store them in a freezer-safe container once completely cooled.

Why are my apples mushy?

They were likely cooked too long, or the heat was too high. Cook just until the apples are tender while still holding their shape.

Can I reduce the sugar?

Yes. If you’re using naturally sweet apples, you can reduce either the brown sugar, the granulated sugar, or both to suit your taste.

Do I have to peel the apples?

Peeling gives the classic soft texture, but you can leave the skins on if you prefer a little more texture and color.

Can I serve fried apples cold?

Yes. They’re traditionally served warm, but they’re also delicious chilled or at room temperature.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes. Use a large skillet so the apples have enough room to cook evenly, and stir gently to keep the slices intact.

Are these like Cracker Barrel Fried Apples?

Yes! They have the same tender apples and buttery cinnamon flavor, but this homemade version lets you control the sweetness and choose your favorite variety of apples.

Storage

Allow the fried apples to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container.

Store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Enjoy them chilled, at room temperature, or gently reheated before serving.

How to Make Fried Apples

NOTE: This section includes a step-by-step guide. Find the full printable recipe in the recipe card below.

Quick steps:

  1. Peel and slice the apples, tossing them with fresh lemon juice as you work.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Cook the apples until they begin to soften.
  4. Stir in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and ginger.
  5. Add the apple juice and simmer until the apples become tender.
  6. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce thickens into a syrup.
  7. Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla, and serve warm.

Why this recipe works: Cooking the apples gently allows them to soften without falling apart, while the cornstarch slurry creates a silky sauce that coats every slice instead of becoming watery.

Make Ahead

Fried apples are an excellent make-ahead side dish.

Prepare them up to four days in advance and refrigerate until needed. Reheat gently in a skillet over low heat or in the microwave until warmed through. The flavors continue to develop as they sit, making leftovers just as delicious as the day they’re made.
