Blackening Seasoning
One thing I love about making my own homemade spice blends is the ability to control the taste and quality of ingredients. I truly believe homemade mixes, more often than not, taste better than their store-bought counterparts.

What is Blackening Seasoning
It is a combination of herbs and spices, often containing chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder or flakes, black pepper, oregano, and thyme. It is very similar to Cajun or Creole seasoning.
Of course, there are variations between different recipes and cooks. You can easily make up your own blend by changing up the ratios of ingredients or by adding or subtracting to your taste.
How to use Blackening Seasoning
When food is blackened, it is dipped in melted butter then dredged in a combination of herbs and spices before being cooked in a very hot pan – usually a cast-iron skillet. The resulting piece of meat or fish will have a flavorful deep brown to black crust on the outside.
Blackened Seasoning FAQs
This seasoning mix is definitely “spicy” – but that doesn’t mean it’s overly hot. If you are looking for a mix with a lot of flavor without too much heat, then this mix is perfect for you.
If you prefer more heat, you can easily adjust this recipe to your tastes by adding more peppers.
Tightly sealed in an airtight container and stored in a cool, dry place, this mix is good for 1 year.
