Honey Baked Ham: Ingredients & Substitutions

To make this Honey Baked Ham recipe, you will need …

Ingredients

  • spiral ham
  • honey – If you don’t have honey on hand, you can substitute it with maple syrup for a unique maple flavor. Alternatively, light corn syrup can be used as a replacement for honey in a pinch.
  • unsalted butter – If you prefer, you can substitute the unsalted butter with margarine or a dairy-free alternative for a lactose-free version of the recipe.
  • white granulated sugar – Instead of white granulated sugar, you can use brown sugar for a richer flavor. The molasses content in brown sugar adds depth to the glaze.
  • onion powder, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, and ground cloves – Feel free to customize the spice blend in the glaze according to your taste preferences. You can add a dash of garlic powder or chili powder for a savory kick or experiment with different spices like allspice for a unique flavor profile.
  • seasoned salt – If you don’t have seasoned salt, you can use regular salt and adjust the seasoning with additional spices like paprika, garlic powder, or onion powder.
  • water

Serving Suggestions for Honey-Baked Glazed Ham

  • Side Dishes: Serve the honey-baked glazed ham with classic side dishes such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables (like carrots, Brussels sprouts, or green beans), sweet potato casserole, or a fresh garden salad.
  • Rolls or Bread: Offer a selection of dinner rolls, biscuits, or crusty bread to accompany the ham. These can be used to make mini sandwiches with leftover ham.
  • Condiments: Provide condiments such as mustard, honey mustard, or cranberry sauce for guests to customize their ham servings.

  • Cheese Platter: Offer a cheese platter with a variety of cheeses, crackers, and nuts as a savory contrast to the sweet ham.
  • Beverages: Serve a selection of beverages such as sparkling cider, wine, or iced tea to accompany the meal.
  • Desserts: Finish the meal with a selection of desserts such as apple pie, pumpkin pie, or cheesecake for a satisfying end to the feast.
