Pin ItThis cheesy tater tot casserole combines everything people love about chili cheese fries with the convenience of a baked casserole. It’s the kind of comfort-food casserole that’s perfect for busy weeknights, casual family dinners, game-day spreads, and potluck gatherings. Every bite is packed with savory chili, crispy potatoes, and gooey cheese.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how efficiently it comes together. While the tater tots bake, the homemade chili simmers on the stovetop. By the time the tots are crispy, the chili is ready to go. I’ve made this recipe using both homemade chili and canned chili, and while canned chili certainly works when you’re short on time, the homemade version adds so much more flavor and texture.
If you’re searching for a ground beef tater tot casserole that’s both easy and satisfying, this recipe checks every box. Whether you’re feeding a hungry family, planning a casual game day menu, or looking for a simple comfort food dinner, this Chili Cheese Tater Tot Casserole deserves a spot on your menu.

Frozen Tater Tots
Tater tots create the crispy potato base for this casserole. Baking them before adding the chili helps them maintain their texture and prevents the casserole from becoming soggy. They’re what give this dish its signature chili-cheese-fries flavor.
Lean Ground Beef
Ground beef forms the base of the homemade chili layer. It adds hearty flavor, protein, and substance, making this a filling dinner recipe that’s satisfying enough to stand on its own.
Onion
Onion adds depth and savory flavor to the chili while complementing the beef and seasonings. As it cooks, it helps create a richer, more flavorful chili mixture.
Chili Powder and Cumin
These classic chili seasonings provide warmth, richness, and the signature flavor that makes this chili tater tot casserole so delicious.
Tomato Sauce
Tomato sauce creates a rich chili base while helping the ingredients come together into a thick, flavorful sauce that won’t make the casserole watery.
Cheddar Cheese
Freshly shredded cheddar cheese melts beautifully, creating a cheesy topping that ties everything together.

Expert Tips For The Best Chili Cheese Tater Tot Casserole
- Bake the tater tots before adding the chili.
- Simmer the chili until it reaches your preferred consistency.
- Drain excess grease from the beef before adding the remaining ingredients.
- Shred your own cheese for the best melt and flavor.

- In my experience, partially baking the tater tots before adding the chili makes the biggest difference in the final texture. It helps the tater tots stay crisp and prevents the casserole from becoming too soft.
