Cake Flour

Cake flour is lighter than all-purpose flour and creates deliciously light and fluffy baked goods. Sometimes you may see it marketed as extra-fine or super-fine flour. This extra-fine consistency allows it to absorb a lot of water. Because of this, you will get a fine crumb with a soft, tender texture.

Typically, Cake Flour makes baked goods with a tender crumb such as brownies, layer cakes, cupcakes, scones, and quick bread. Sometimes it is also used to make pastries or other desserts that are light and fluffy.

The great thing is you don’t have to buy a specialty product! You can easily make this recipe at home with only two ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. You will need all-purpose flour and cornstarch. That’s it! So simple, right?

Cake Flour FAQs

➡️ What happens if you use cake flour instead of all-purpose flour?

Because of the lower protein content of the cake flour, it will produce less gluten. Therefore, using it in recipes will make for a lighter texture in the final product.

➡️ How should I store Cake Flour?

It’s best to store it in an airtight glass or plastic container at room temperature. It should be good for up to 3-4 months. If it’s left in a cooler part of your house, it can last for up to 6-8 months.
– To make it last longer, you can also refrigerate it in an airtight container for up to one year.
– You can also freeze it for up to two years in an airtight freezer-safe container.
– Note, flour stored for a long time may not yield the same results as fresh flour.

Recipe Tips

  • Aside from being used in baked goods, you can also use it to make homemade play-dough or homemade glue!
  • The best way to tell if any flour has gone bad is to smell it or look at it. If it smells rancid or shows signs of mold, you should throw it out.
  • You can also use equal parts arrowroot powder in place of the cornstarch.
