Tackle another school year prepared and self-assured!

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Carson-Dellosa. I reviewed the free content on their website to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

Despite the importance of summer adventure, we don't want everything the kids learned during the school year to fall to the wayside. Having fun and enjoying the time off remains a priority, but we want to make sure our children return to tackle another new school year, prepared and self-assured. #SmarterSummer #IC #ad

Yes, you are in the right place! I know this (school and/or education) isn't a subject I talk about very often, but many of you know that we are a homeschool family. For our family, it was an easy decision to pull our kids out of public school. However, it hasn't always been easy finding curriculum that fits our family's values and style of learning ... or keeping the kids on task or realizing how much life changes the dynamics in your household when you're together almost 24/7. I have found that we naturally integrate learning into so many facets of our lives without even realizing it. At least with my own kids, it seems to be as long as they think it's fun or a game, they're okay with learning. Break out the books and let it be called "school" .... you'll probably get a few mumbles and a lot less enthusiasm.

Based on a survey conducted by Carson-Dellosa, 84% of teachers say students forget or "lose" some skills, knowledge or grade-level equivalency during the summer. When I worked in the public school system, we would spend the first 4 to 6 weeks of the year just going over old material from last year and getting up to speed for the new material. Even with my own kids, I find this to be true. Without the repetition and drilling it in, it's often forgotten. Four to six weeks out of the school year is a lot of time!

Even though my kids are homeschooled, we tend to take it easier in the summer. I mean, that's what summer is about right, having fun and no school?! Plus, we have that pool in the backyard that keeps calling our name! Even though we enjoy the fun, I try to encourage the kids to spend about 15-20 minutes each day reinforcing skills from last year - and even starting to learn skills for the new skill year. Fifteen minutes is easy and doable!

I found out about a website called Carson-Dellosa! Carson-Dellosa Summer Learning Activities website is designed to help your child stay mentally sharp over the summer. You can sign up for free and get access to fun educational games, sample books, printable worksheets, and activities that you can use all summer long to help stop summer learning loss. The Summer Learning Computer Games are fun and educational, making them a go-to for fun learning during the summer - my kids don't even see it as learning, they see it as playing on the computer!! The website is the right place for access to standards-aligned resources and over 900 printable and reproducible activities. I love that it is broken down to grade level and is very user-friendly!
